English broadcaster Kate Garraway misses her husband, who died in January after a long battle with COVID-19, and reveals her life without him ahead of a lonely Christmas this year.
Kate Garraway went on a family trip to Cornwall with parents
In June 2024, Kate showed off a new car to the followers, which she was planning to take on a family holiday to Cornwall. She posted a video on Instagram with the caption that her late husband Derek would have loved the car. She also mentioned the Vickie Volvo carjacking incident. Garraway thanked some friends who helped her get the @volvocaruk C90, which she was delighted with. According to the Good Morning Britain presenter, the Volvo is the perfect car and it really helped them out during her husband’s long illness.
In the video, Kate talks about how the car arrived just before the annual family trip. She was preparing to take mum and dad to Cornwall with all the Garraways. She was also wondering what name to give the car this time.
Commenting on Kate’s new post, her fans wished her a good holiday and advised to name the new Volvo Derek, in honor of her late husband, who would have definitely loved it.
Kate Garraway and her children prepare for their first Christmas without Derek
Despite the difficulties that Kate Garraway is going through in connection with the death of her husband, in an interview with Woman and Home magazine she admitted that she really wants to celebrate the upcoming Christmas without tears and sadness.
She told their children, daughter Darcey and son Billy, that they were going to make new memories and fill their lives with joy. Kate also noted that the last four or five Christmases had been very difficult because of Derek’s illness, but the family was happy to be together. Former political lobbyist Derek Draper was diagnosed with Covid-19 in March 2020 and spent more than a year in hospital. The illness left him with multiple medical complications, and Garraway said he may never recover. His case was extremely serious and long-term, so he required round-the-clock medical supervision. Although Kate’s husband returned home in April 2021, he remained in a serious condition until Garraway announced his death in January 2024. He died at the age of 56 on January 3, 2024 from cardiac arrest, which was a consequence of Covid-19 and other concomitant diseases.
Derek Draper is an English political lobbyist and policy adviser, best known for two political scandals – “Lobbygate” in 1998 and the 2009 scandal involving the LabourList website.
Life goes on no matter what
Kate Garraway says it’s sad that Draper doesn’t get to see their children grow up and achieve new successes. This year, 18-year-old daughter Darcy left home to start her first year at university, and Kate was there to help. Garraway shared the process of packing daughter’s staff into the car, including a family photo and her late father’s hat.
Kate Garraway admits she is a little upset to let the eldest child leave home, as she still remembers how recently they brought this babygirl home from the hospital. At the same time, Kate emphasized that she is very proud of Darcy and is confident that dad is protecting his daughter along the way.
